Cheap Car Insurance Factors Into Best Car Ratings

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

The U.S. News & World Report “Best Car for the Money Awards 2011″ factors a lot of things into their best car rankings.  Car makers realize that value is tops on many consumers’ lists when they are looking to purchase a new car.  With money tight and consumers driving their used cars longer than ever before, new cars need to add a lot of value to their lives before consumers decide to make a big purchase.  The top car in each category not only is a great car, but also has low ownership costs over a five year period.  Cheap car insurance and maintenance costs are taken into effect along with other ownership costs.

Some of the highlights were the Honda Civic for Best Compact Car, the Honda Fit for Best Hatchback, the Ford Taurus for Best Family Sedan, and the Ford Fiesta for Best Subcompact Car.  The Kia Sedona was the Best Minivan, the Suzuki Equator was the Best Compact Truck, and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was the Best Full Size Truck.  In the SUV department, the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport was the Best Compact Crossover, the Chevrolet Traverse was the Best Midsize Crossover, and the Chevrolet Tahoe was the Best Full Size SUV.  For the rest of the Best Cars and more detail on the winners, see the full article.

One interesting fact is that Honda and Toyota are being challenged by newer, smaller companies like Kia, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai.  The Buick Regal’s win for Best Upscale Sedan was quite an upset for luxury lines like Lexus and BMW.  All automakers seem to be adding value to the cars they sell in order to impress consumers.  This study took into effect more than just the value added to cars.  A State Farm auto quote, or one from another insurer, makes a big difference in the value your car brings.  Added costs like car insurance, fuel costs, maintenance costs, and depreciation also make a difference in the value that the car will bring to a consumer.

Car Insurance Most Affordable in MA for 2nd Year

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Massachusetts residents can rest easy knowing they have the most affordable car insurance in the United States for the second year in a row.  Unfortunately for Louisiana residents, they have the least affordable car insurance for the second year in a row.  InsWeb’s 2011 Car Insurance Affordability Index ranked the 50 states from most to least affordable.  It’s a study performed yearly by InsWeb and the results have been detailed in a company press release.

The states are ranked on an affordability factor.  It is not simply how expensive car insurance rates are that is taken into effect for the rankings.  They also look at the median income of residents in the state.  The median car insurance rate is divided by the median household income to determine each state’s affordability factor.  Many studies compare the car insurance rates and rank the most expensive to the least, but InsWeb’s study helps us understand how much of our budget is going towards car insurance.  Finding cheap car insurance relative to your income is easiest in Massachusetts and most difficult in Louisiana.

After Massachusetts, the remaining top ten states for most affordable car insurance in order are Hawaii, Minnesota, North Carolina, Utah, Wisconsin, Iowa, Idaho, Ohio, and Vermont.  Companies like Allmerica car insurance offer rates that are low in comparison to median salaries in these areas for many different reasons.  The ten states with the worst affordability factors following Louisiana in the 51st spot are Washington D.C., West Virginia, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Arizona, New York, and Florida.

No-Fault Payouts from Car Insurance Companies

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

According to the Rochester Homepage in New York, lawmakers in the state are working to crack down on fraudulent no-fault car insurance claims.  This is good news for car insurance companies, especially those dealing with fraud related to no-fault car insurance claims.  After a car accident, no-fault insurance allows drivers to be paid out even though the blame for the car accident is not placed on either driver.  Unfortunately, New York state lawmakers say that there are a lot of fraudulent claims being paid out and that New Yorkers are paying millions of dollars a year for these fraudulent no-fault claims.

Some criminals actually create car accidents so that they can file a no-fault insurance claim with their car insurer.  Insurance companies like Infinity auto insurance are obviously not happy about that and will be pleased to see lawmakers help cut down on false claims.  Lawmakers have already made it a felony to cause a car accident intentionally, the first step in cutting out this fraud.  Even though there aren’t that many people filing fraudulent claims, it really does effect everyone because it causes car insurance rates to increase.  Lawmakers hope to find a way to cut down on this expensive fraud very soon.

Infinity Auto Insurance Sees Change in Wisconsin

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Drivers in Wisconsin may start paying even less for their car insurance premiums, even though studies have shown that they already pay the fourth least in United States.  According to “Car Insurance levels could drop in Wisconsin” by Cameron Clark of Fox11 WLUK-TV, a bill was passed by the state Senate on Tuesday.  Back in 2009, a bill was enacted requiring Wisconsin drivers to increase their insurance coverage from companies like Infinity auto insurance.  The Senate was led by Democrats who backed this increase in liability coverage, but now that Republicans are in charge they are looking to repeal that bill.

Wisconsin residents currently have to carry $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident in liability coverage.  From 1982 to 2010, they were required to carry $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident and those are the levels that the repeal would return requirements to.  Finding cheap car insurance should now be easier for those residents who are struggling financially, but still want to meet the minimum car insurance requirements set by the law.  Most drivers would save money on their premiums if this law is repealed.

A State Farm Insurance rep confirmed that most people asking for a State Farm auto quote saw a rate increase because of this increased liability coverage.  She says that drivers will have more options for their car insurance and lower premiums overall if the bill is repealed.  Supporters of the higher liability coverage worry that drivers may lose out in the case of an accident.  They think that these lower amounts of liability coverage will not pay for all of the damage or medical costs associated with an accident in many cases.  The vote heads to the State Assembly later on this month.

Finding Cheap Car Insurance in North Dakota

Monday, January 17th, 2011

If you are looking for inexpensive car insurance, North Dakota is a good place to live.  According to “ND Reportedly One of the Cheapest States for Auto Insurance,” John Pirro of Online Auto Insurance News discusses results from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).  Finding cheap car insurance in North Dakota shouldn’t be difficult, according to Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm.

The average price of car insurance in North Dakota is $644.  This includes comprehensive, collision, and liability coverage.  The data from 2008 says that the average rate in America is $903, giving North Dakotans a 28.5% lower rate than the average American.  A State Farm auto quote for a North Dakota resident will save them money over the national average.  The high competition keeps premiums low in North Dakota and makes it a healthy marketplace.

Iowa and Wisconsin were the only two states with cheaper car insurance premiums in 2008.  With the exception of South Dakota whose premiums were close at $651, North Dakota’s other surrounding states had much higher car insurance.  Minnesota’s premiums averaged $780 and Montana’s averaged $829.  North Dakota did actually have the cheapest car insurance when accounting for the average expenditure.  This average expenditure of $503 assumes that while all vehicles have liability insurance, they may not carry collision and comprehensive coverage.

Car Insurance Companies Give Discounts

Wednesday, December 29th, 2010

In recent years car insurance companies have realized that “one size fits all” really doesn’t apply to car insurance plans.  The New York Post article “Pay-as-you-drive insurance revs up” by Jeremy Olshan describes a new way to get some traffic off the clogged New York streets.  We recently wrote about insurance companies trying out the pay-as-you-drive system while some places in the country have been using this system for years.  The Bloomberg administration in New York is hoping that a system like this where you save money the less you drive will help keep some drivers off the road and unclog the streets.

While insurance companies traditionally made up for the more frequent accidents by high mileage drivers with premiums from low mileage drivers, this new way of charging customers would change all that.  Driving could be reduced by as much as 8%, emissions by as much as 2%, and oil consumption could go down as much as 4% with these incentives.  A State Farm insurance quote could lower drivers’ rates by up to $270 per car just by installing a device in your car that monitors the number of miles you drive and other driving habits.

Progressive’s Snapshot plan was approved in New York just recently.  In other states, drivers have saved as much as 30% off of their premiums by having their mileage and driving time monitored for six months.  Progressive also looks at acceleration and hard braking and takes those factors into account.  GMAC offers insurance plans using monitoring from their OnStar systems.  The pay-as-you-go plans are not yet available in New York, but have been successful around the country.  Drivers must drive less than 15,000 miles a year to qualify.  Those driving fewer than 5,000 miles a year have received over half off their premiums.  While some are concerned about privacy related to tracking drivers, the ability to save money and cut down on traffic seems to override that.

Progressive Auto Insurance Tracks Drivers

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

An innovative new device can help drivers get cheap car insurance.  Jolie O’Dell’s article “Insurance Company Tracks Driver Responsibility With In-Car Device” on Yahoo!News describes the “Snapshot” program.  The device plugs into cars to track the responsibility of drivers.  If it shows that you are responsible, you can get up to 30% off of your car insurance premium.  Progressive auto insurance is offering this device in New York right now, but hopes to bring the program to other states soon.

Progressive monitors drivers for 30 days with the small device that plugs right into the diagnostic port in your car.  The “Snapshot” tracks what time of day you drive, how frequently you drive, if you make sudden stops, and other driving behaviors.  Drivers who drive less often or during the least busy driving times will get larger discounts off their car insurance premiums.  There is no GPS with the device so drivers don’t have to worry about being tracked or losing privacy.  This high-tech device may be used by other insurance companies in the future.

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

California car insurance customers could be getting lower rates soon from Farmers auto insurance.  The company is cutting the rates and offering rebates to many of their customers in order to be priced alongside their other unit, Mid-Century Insurance.  This information comes from Online Auto Insurance article “Some Calif. Car Insurance Customers to Get Rebates, Rate Cuts” by Ben Zitney.  With close to 640,000 vehicles insured by Farmers Insurance Exchange in California, a lot of people could get money back from these discounts and rebates.

Those eligible will get a 10% rebate on their premium and an average of 14.5% reduced from the rates they pay.  The process began with people renewing memberships beginning July 15 of this year and will include those renewing through January 15,2011.  An average rebate check will be around $50 with Farmers auto insurance paying a total of nearly $32 million.  Customers hoping for cheap car insurance will be thrilled to see these rate reductions totaling $72 million in savings for customers.  By streamlining the products, costs, and coverage options across the board, Farmers customers and agents will greatly benefit.

Car Insurance at Miami’s New RCC

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

A one of a kind new rental car center has just opened at Miami International Airport (MIA).  According to Just News article “Rental Car Center Eases Hassle At MIA,” this rental car center is a one-stop shop for Miami travelers needing rental cars.  The building houses sixteen different rental car companies and has a garage that can hold 6,500 vehicles.

Renting a car, obtaining car insurance, and much more will be available to nearly 28,000 people every day in this rental car center.  Officials in Miami say that it is the first of its kind in the United States.  There are also 130 gas pumps and 42 bays to wash cars available.  The Florida Department of Transportation is hoping to get stops at the rental car center for Amtrak, bus, and the county’s Metrorail transportation services.

So far, travelers are very happy with the center and have said it is perfect and it cuts down on complications that could arise.  The rental car center is expected to reduce the traffic congestion notorious at larger airports.  This is good news for insurance companies like Liberty Mutual who see a lot of fender benders outside of airports.  There is also a new shuttle bus service for the rental car center.

State Farm Insurance Quote Lower With iPhone App

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Young drivers have a new way to get a lower State Farm Insurance Quote.  State Farm introduced its second iPhone application last month and 9,000 people have already downloaded it.  This information is from “New State Farm app aimed at young drivers” by Ryan Denham of Pantagraph.  The application is called Steer Clear Mobile and is geared towards drivers under age 25.  They download videos, trip logs, and self-assessments to their iPhone or iTouch and go through this safe driving program.  The Steer Clear discount program can save young drivers up to 15% off of their car insurance.

State Farm’s mobile team wanted to take advantage of a media form that young drivers use and try to make them all safer.  Since they may not tell their parents or teachers that they have driving questions, the hope is that they’ll learn how to drive safer and buy State Farm car insurance because of the discount.  This program was previously available, but was done either through an agent or by downloading and printing out the forms.  The program takes a few weeks to complete and must be reviewed by an agent for verification.  Some added benefits to iPhone application users are a section on driving tips based on weather and places to find an agent.
