Car Insurance Companies Offering Usage-Based Discounts

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Are you one of the 70 million drivers who could be paying less for you car insurance each year because of your driving habits?  According to the Insurance Journal article “70 Million Drivers Missing Out on Car Insurance Savings: Insurer,” having your driving habits monitored could save you some money.  Our previous blog mentioned Progressive’s new Snapshot driving program, one of the first programs available.  Usage based car insurance programs give discounts for people who drive less often, are safer, and drive during the safest times of the day.  A recent phone study showed that 50% of people drive less than 12,000 miles each year, 84% of drivers believe they are cautious or defensive while driving, and 88% of drivers are hardly ever on the road between midnight and 4:00 am.

Progressive estimates that with all three of those factors taken into consideration, close to 40% of drivers could get a discount on their car insurance.  That is 70 million drivers that could be paying hundreds less for their car insurance each year, up to 30% less.  Safeco, Travelers and many other companies are also offering these usage based discount options.  Some estimates say as many as 60% of car insurance companies have the program in place.  In Progressive’s research, they determined that 63% of drivers would be willing to put a device in their car, in the event that it could lead to some savings.  They also estimate that drivers using their Snapshot system are less likely to get into a car accident and less likely to receive a ticket for a moving violation.

Looking for a Way to Lower Your Car Insurance?

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

One of the top car insurance companies will monitor your driving habits, which may get you a discount on your car insurance.  Progressive Insurance has a little device called “snapshot” that can be installed in your car, according to KEPR-TV in Washington.  By letting ‘big brother’, aka your car insurance company, monitor your driving habits, you could save up to 30% off of your car insurance premiums.  And for those who are worried that their insurance company doesn’t think they drive as safely as they think they do, your insurance will not go up because of installing the “snapshot”.  It is only meant to track safe driving habits for offering discounts.

The devices will monitor all kinds of things related to your driving.  They look at what time of day you tend to drive, how many miles you drive, how hard you brake, how fast you go and more.  After 30 days of monitoring, Progressive Insurance will check your plug-in device and see how safe your driving actually was.  If they deem you a safe driver, you’ll get a discount.  You will still be monitored after the trial period if you’ve been given a discount, so make sure that you keep driving safely and don’t make any big changes in your mileage or speed.  Currently, Progressive offers the “snapshot” trial in more than 30 states.

Top Car Insurance Companies for Military Employment

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Military Times EDGE takes a yearly survey of the Fortune 1,000 companies and government contractors to determine the most military and veteran friendly companies.  Progressive car insurance made the employer list for the Best for Vets 2011.  The top fifty employers for military veterans are based on recruitment of military personnel, their policies regarding reserves, and the overall corporate culture.

Progressive is a very active recruiter of military workers through job fairs, military job boards, online and social media websites, and also military magazines and newspapers.  They also work closely with the Department of Defense program TAP, which assists veterans transitioning to civilian life after military tours or careers.  Active-duty reservists get 100% differential pay from Progressive car insurance, so if they make more at Progressive than in the military they won’t lose that pay while serving.

As one of the top car insurance companies for military veterans to work for, Progressive maintains a culture very supportive of the military.  They offer medical benefits while reservists are serving and even have a hiring program for spouses of their military employees.  It may be hard to find other car insurance companies with such great military benefits, but Military Times EDGE hopes that many companies will follow Progressive’s lead.  They find veterans to have great leadership and discipline, making them excellent workers.

Progressive Car Insurance Website Ranks Tops

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

Progressive.com, the website for Progressive car insurance, has been ranked as the top insurance website by Keynote Competitive Research.  The second quarter Insurance Carrier Scorecard rankings were just released, according to Progressive’s press release “Progressive Car Insurance Ranks Number One on Keynote Systems’ Insurance Carrier Scorecard.”  Progressive’s website has actually ranked number one on all but one of the Keynote Scorecards since the year 2000.  A Progressive car insurance spokesperson said that their main goal is making it easy for customers to use their website to purchase car insurance, review or change the policies, or anything else they are looking to simplify.

They are not only one of the easiest website’s to use, they are tops with innovation and responding to changing technology.  It is as simple to change vehicles during the online quote process as it is to understand the different options for coverage available.  Many top car insurance companies do not have a customer friendly website like Progressive car insurance.  Progressive has a lot of new apps for smartphones that keep them ranking high.  Customers can submit photos of accident damage with one app and actually submit claims for glass damage with another.  In addition to ranking number one overall, Progressive car insurance also ranked at the top of the list in seven of the nine other categories.  The categories they were number one in include ‘get insurance,’ ‘get service,’ ‘functionality,’ ‘quality and availability,’ ‘check and pay bill,’ ‘privacy and security,’ and ‘view policy information.’

Advertising Icons & State Farm Car Insurance Quotes

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

In The Patriot-News article “Car insurance: How can I tell where to get the cheapest rates?,” Liam Migdail-Smith discusses some of the most popular car insurance spokespersons and what deals their companies actually offer.  Geico uses characters like their Gecko and Caveman to advertise themselves as having low rates and saving you lots of money.  Whether or not you’ll save money and pay less for your premium really depends on a number of factors, so shopping around is still crucial.

Companies like Esurance advertise the benefit of shopping online to get your insurance quotes.  You can also shop with an agent if you prefer, but many people like to get their quotes and even purchase insurance online now.  While many large car insurance companies offer the ability to shop online and get rate quotes, with some companies you still have to speak with an agent before making your purchase.  Choosing the price you are willing to pay is a new campaign advertised by Progressive Insurance Company’s well-known spokeswoman Flo.  You are able to name your own price, and then pick the coverage options you can afford within that price.  While this new way of pricing may appeal to some consumers, it won’t necessarily save you money.

While it is obvious that you will pay more money for more coverage, Allstate spokesmen Dennis Haysbert and “Mayhem” remind you that getting quality coverage should be more important than getting the cheapest coverage.  State Farm advertises it’s “good neighbor” mentality by showing insurance agents at your side whenever you need them.  They say that getting State Farm car insurance quotes will pair you up with top notch customer service, something they believe is most important.  Other perks exist like Nationwide’s vanishing deductible, but keep in mind that they usually require loyalty to the insurer over a period of time.

Progressive Auto Insurance Tracks Drivers

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

An innovative new device can help drivers get cheap car insurance.  Jolie O’Dell’s article “Insurance Company Tracks Driver Responsibility With In-Car Device” on Yahoo!News describes the “Snapshot” program.  The device plugs into cars to track the responsibility of drivers.  If it shows that you are responsible, you can get up to 30% off of your car insurance premium.  Progressive auto insurance is offering this device in New York right now, but hopes to bring the program to other states soon.

Progressive monitors drivers for 30 days with the small device that plugs right into the diagnostic port in your car.  The “Snapshot” tracks what time of day you drive, how frequently you drive, if you make sudden stops, and other driving behaviors.  Drivers who drive less often or during the least busy driving times will get larger discounts off their car insurance premiums.  There is no GPS with the device so drivers don’t have to worry about being tracked or losing privacy.  This high-tech device may be used by other insurance companies in the future.

Progressive Car Insurance Has 1st Android App

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

According to “Progressive Launches Industry’s First Android App for Car Insurance,” a Progressive car insurance press release, they have the first Android app relating to car insurance.  It uses the Google Android operating system to allow smart phone users to access a number of Progressive services.  ComScore, Inc., a digital measuring company, reports Android as the smart phone platform with the most rapid growth in the market currently.  Since launching the app, Progressive has seen a large increase in Android customers visiting their mobile based web site.  It’s really designed to help customers simplify each aspect of their car insurance.

This free application is similar to Progressive’s iPhone app and is available in the Android marketplace.  Car insurance companies work hard to compete for young business and staying on top of the latest technology is a great way to do that.  With the Android app users can obtain quotes and a policy, make payments and changes to their account, and find directions to an agent or their nearest service center.  They can also do research on recalls or crash tests, calculate car loan payments, compare insurance on different cars, make and track their claims, and watch Progressive’s television commercials.  There isn’t much related to car insurance that can’t be done with Progressive’s mobile app.
