African Americans Have a Harder Time Finding Cheap Car Insurance

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

A recent study by an online auto insurance quote company found that African Americans pay more for their car insurance than other races.  The Yahoo! News article “African-Americans Are Charged Much More For Auto Insurance Than People Of Other Races, New Study Shows,” talks about the study performed on men in New York City.  Black men have the hardest time finding cheap car insurance because the study found that they pay $800 more per year than white and Asian men on average.  The study is quick to point out that car insurance companies are not discriminating against black men, they have worse scores on the factors companies use to determine car insurance rates.

Four of the main factors used to determine car insurance rates by companies like Farmers auto insurance are credit scores, neighborhood safety, marital status and employment status.  Unfortunately, African-Americans tend to have poorer scores on all four of those factors than white and Asian men.  Their credit scores tend to be lower, their neighborhoods tend to be less safe, they get married less often and divorced more frequently, and the unemployment rate is higher in this demographic.  So while being African American is not a determining factor to pay higher car insurance rates, the average black man has higher risk factors and therefore, pays more in car insurance.  Average yearly rates for black men are $2,910, $2,193 for white men, and $1,945 for Asian men.

Cut Your Donegal Insurance Bill in Half

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

By taking on some more risk when it comes to car insurance, you may be able to lower your insurance bill by as much as half with companies like Donegal Insurance.  Fox Business recently posted an article entitled “How to Cut Your Car Insurance Bill in Half” to explain how to go about it.  First you’ll have to research your individual state’s minimum coverage requirements because they do differ.  Many states have minimum coverage of 25/50/10, which translates to $25,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 of bodily injury coverage per accident, and $10,000 of property-damage coverage per accident.  However most insurers set you up automatically with 100/300/50 coverage which is significantly more than the minimum in most states.

By reducing your liability limits to the minimum you can save a lot of money.  Other ways to save include getting rid of your collision and comprehensive coverage, increasing your deductible to at least $1,000, and dropping your uninsured motorists (UM) coverage.  By using all or a combination of these changes, you have the ability to lower your car insurance payments by half.  In the article’s financial example, they lowered their minimum coverage to 25/50/10, eliminated their comprehensive, collision, and rental coverage, but left their UM coverage there.  Payment reductions were 35% for a Cadillac Escalade, 46% for a Chrysler Town & County, 47% for a Toyota Camry, 48% for a Hyundai Santa Fe, and 50% for a Ford F-150.

You have to understand that reducing coverage like this will add a lot of risk to your car insurance needs.  Be sure to speak with an agent or multiple agents to see what type of risk and coverage is best for your individual situation.  Another good way to lower your car insurance payments is to shop around and see what pricing you can get from a company like Farmers auto insurance.  Look for deals and make sure that the company has a good reputation from the BBB and lacks a lot of complaints.  You can save a lot of money by shopping around.

Bristol West Car Insurance Now Related to 21st Century

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Farmers Insurance will soon be the third largest auto insurance company in the United States, according to Bristol West’s website.  Bristol West car insurance belongs to the Farmers’ family and they are getting some new members.  Farmers recently acquired AIG’s Personal Auto insurance business.  This includes 21st Century auto insurance, among others.  Although all of the companies are related, they run separately and offer their own unique customer benefits in their marketplaces.  Bristol West and Farmers’ Foremost Group will begin to merge and run concurrently.

Bristol West operates in 40 of the United States currently.  They assure their customers that their merger with Farmers auto insurance and the acquisition of AIG and 21st Century will not affect Bristol West customers.  Policies will remain unchanged and their great service and excellent products will move forward with the company.  Bristol West has combined their operations with the Foremost Group of Companies, so while policies and services will remain unchanged, some insurance documents may look a little different with the Foremost name attached.

Check Farmers Auto Insurance Before Going Without

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Unfortunately for the rest of us, many people in need of extra cash during these tough economic times are getting rid of their car insurance.  According to “More local drivers foregoing car insurance to make ends meet” from Washington news station KREM, Marissa Bagg describes this effect from the nationwide recession.  Each state in the U.S. requires drivers to carry insurance on their vehicles, but you are not required to show proof when obtaining or renewing a driver’s license.  So when forced with a choice to insure their vehicle or buy food for their family, Americans are choosing the latter. It’s always better to look for cheap car insurance to keep yourself safe though.

Companies like Farmers auto insurance may work with you to help you keep your car insured and avoid costly expenses related to not having insurance.  Local Washington insurance companies are dealing with the problem in different ways.  One company said it has lost 1/4 of its business due to the economy and customers saying they cannot afford to keep car insurance.  State Farm Car Insurance is working with consumers and allowing them to suspend their policies in order to save the money needed to pay their premiums and not be considered uninsured.  They have seen customers lessening coverage and cutting down on other things though.  Before you cancel your car insurance policy, see if you company will work with you to avoid the huge expenses that will come if any accidents occur.

State Farm Car Insurance Ranks Well in Overall Satisfaction

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

J.D. Power & Associates’ 2009 National Auto Insurance Study rated numerous car insurance companies in terms of five categories.  The accompanying press release, “Lower Premiums at the Onset of the Current Recession Drive Significant Increase in Overall Satisfaction With Auto Insurance Companies, But a Hardening Market Could Eradicate 10 Years of Progress,” explains the results in detail.  Amica Mutual had the highest ratings for the tenth year in a row, with the highest marks in all five categories.  The factors measured were overall satisfaction, contacting the insurer, policy offerings, billing and payment, and pricing.  The overall rankings for the car insurance industry were at a five-year high in 2009, partly based on lower premiums because of the economic recession.

State Farm car insurance ranked “better than most” in overall satisfaction, “among the best” in contacting the insurer, and “better than most” in two of the remaining three categories.  USAA and New Jersey Manufacturers Insurance Co. were the other two standouts ranking “among the best” in all categories, but they are both only offered to a limited group of people.  Farmers auto insurance and most other insurers ranked “about average.”  Over forty percent of customers said that their premiums decreased without having to shop around and switch to another insurer.  Unfortunately, history shows that about a year after recessions, customer satisfaction declines as rates begin rising.  If the car insurance companies talk with their customers before potential rate increases and try to work with them, it might work to dissuade negative opinions as prices inevitably rise again.
